About Michael Van Camp

What I am best at, absolutely awesome at is hiring, developing, managing and leading rock star teams of engineers. It is interesting, I've found this coming up a lot recently... why am I a manager? I am a software engineer by training and experience... I have built things, I love building things and I miss full time coding... so why did I make the decision to focus on engineering leadership? Many engineering managers are engineers who defaulted into management by age or because often that is the only way to make more money. In my experience, few engineering managers do it because they LOVE it, because they can't NOT do it. Just as the best software engineers truly love what they do, the people who are best at ANYTHING are those who truly love it and have a passion for it. That is the relationship I have with management and leadership. I get the same rush from helping engineers and teams be more effective that I do from optimizing SQL queries or getting a difficult package dependency conflict resolved.I spend my time helping software engineers and managers unlock their potential, be successful and in the process build great things. This is what I do. Not so incidentally, helping my product partners deliver value and joy to our customers. My professional experience is best described as DevOps, SRE, Production Engineering or web development. As a hands on technologist, I can contribute in the following areas: Linux or BSD SA, networking, MySQL, AWS, Jira and Confluence administration, New Relic, Perl, PHP, Apache, Git, Ruby, Python.I'm familiar with: OpenStack, Zabbix, Nagios, SOA, SaaS, IaaS, PaaS, TDD, CI/CD, Data centers, Production Operations / SRE, streaming video, log analysis and billing, CRM software design and implementation, Media website design and development. Also SOC2 audit planning, preparation and execution along with similar compliance/governance type processes from an IT and Operations point of view.

Mar 2019 - Present

Senior Director Of Operations

San Mateo, California, Us

Initially hired to assist the VP of Operations in running the SRE portion of Hightail's overall Operations group, when he left shortly after I started I was asked to take on all of his responsibilities: IT, InfoSec and Networking in addition to SRE. I managed to do so fairly smoothly, with 100% staff retention. An early focus was on improving the relationship between the Dev and Ops teams. Initially a fairly tense "Them vs Us" relationship, over time it softened into a true DevOps partnership through the use of cross-functional embedding and coaching in active listening etc. At my first annual review I was recognized by the executive leadership team for driving a dramatic change in culture. In parallel I inherited something new to me: a SOC2 audit that had just kicked off. It was a great experience to learn about SOC2, its requirements and how to meet them as well as how to document compliance. As a result I instituted improved ITIL-compliant processes in partnership with the Dev team that made the following year's audit go much smoother. Another benefit of those processes was a significant improvement in uptime. An ongoing theme during the first two years was reducing operational costs, primarily achieved by migrating from colo-based on premise solutions to an all cloud AWS solution. This project resulted in saving millions of dollars per year.During December of 2017 and January of 2018 I conducted analysis of AWS billing/usage data to provide costs and 2018 financial forecasts during the due diligence prior to our acquisition by OpenText.Following acquisition I played a pivotal role in our successful integration into OpenText and eventually transitioned to leading the OpenText Anywhere cloud platform initiative from the Cloud Applications side, leveraging my DevOps engineering background to ensure product requirements are properly filtered and clarified when provided to the engineering team building OpenText's internal cloud platform.

A broadly horizontal function, this team works with every aspect of the iOS software stack as well as underlying hardware. We also owned a performance QA environment that supplements the functional and performance QA individual teams operate. This environment and the resulting metrics along with a keen eye to developer and user experiences allow the team to operate as guardians of the impressive performance that is a hallmark of iOS.The internal perspective I gained from this position has given me a huge amount of respect for the skill, experience, innovation and sheer hard work that go into keeping iOS blazing fast.
