My dedication is illustrated in a story from a marathon that I ran here in Orange County a few years ago. Although I was a sprinter back in the day, I decided to give marathons a try, and I researched rigorous training programs. I showed up on race day with a goal of finishing in <4 hours (I finished my first marathon in 4:17, and I wanted to beat that time). Around mile 19, I noticed a struggling runner; she looked ready to quit. I learned that she wanted to qualify for the Boston Marathon, which required that she come in under 4:30. She winced upon noticing a looming hill. I knew she was in trouble, so I told her to follow me. “I’ll get you out of here,” I told her. I slowed my pace and led her out of the ravine. We made it to the next water stop, and she had recovered enough to finish on her own, so I went on ahead. I missed my goal time by a few minutes, but I looked up at the clock and saw that she had come in at 4:25, which meant she would qualify for the Boston race.
