    This was by far the most rewarding position I have ever held, working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. When things went well, it was magical; when they didn't, it was soul-crushing. My most incredible colleagues had four legs; as far as we were concerned, they were all unicorns. I love all of my children... all 48 of them :)As a Child Advocate and Equine Handler across four Wisconsin counties, I provided unwavering support and advocacy for children who had experienced abuse or trauma. I ensured their rights and well-being were prioritized, fostering trust and removing fear.I represented these children during IEP meetings in schools, advocating for their educational needs and bridging gaps between overwhelmed mothers and professionals. I also identified appropriate after-school and waiver programs, including equine and experiential therapy, to address their unique needs.As a liaison for children re-entering normalcy after in-patient stays, I facilitated their transition, identifying ongoing trauma when they couldn't express it. My role as a mandated reporter involved identifying and reporting suspected abuse, maintaining detailed documentation, and collaborating with program leaders for the child's safety.Therapeutic riding sessions helped children feel love again, build trust within themselves again, and redirect their own behavior with dignity through their bond with horses. I managed daily horse care, ensuring their well-being for effective therapy. Our time with the horses profoundly impacted the children’s healing and assisted them in rebuilding a new life on their own terms with new friends. Their first new friends were found in the love and trust they earned. One is a false move with a horse emotionally, and all trust is lost, so the lessons from the heart are powerful for everyone, as well as the gift of hope, a child knowing that the horses would be waiting for them when they returned was a reason to try another day and keep living.
