About Mikk-Markus Imala
As a research-oriented mechanical engineer, I specialize in vehicle design and structural analysis. I have a comprehensive background spanning both the naval and automotive industries. In the automotive industry, I led the structural design development in a 2-year European Union project to develop a safe, lightweight, and fully electric city car. I was the lead engineer for chassis and body panel development and for the integration of all car subsystems to the chassis such as the suspension, powertrain, HVAC and brake system. I oversaw and contributed to the on-site assembly of a complete prototype demo vehicle and 2 crash test cars. In the naval industry, I worked on 3 separate retrofitting projects, where I lead the integration of scrubber tanks with the ship structures. That involved developing and preparing documentation for the modification of the original ship stiffening structures. These projects individually involved 4-5 scrubbers weighing around 10-15 tonnes each with unique requirements and spatial availability for the foundations due to piping and surrounding machinery.I am currently pursuing my Ph.D, and as of spring 2024, I am finishing my 4th year of research. I have my first scientific article published with two more articles being published in 2024/2025. My research focus lies in pioneering a groundbreaking finite element methodology aimed at assessing stress distributions in large structures. Leveraging my eight years of combined experience in computer-aided design and finite element analysis between industry experience and academic research experience, I am equipped with a profound understanding of engineering principles and delivering results-driven solutions.Primary skills:1. Computer-Aided Design (CAD software - NX, Solidworks)2. Finite Element Analysis (FEM software - FEMAP, Abaqus, Ansys)3. Rapid prototyping (use of 3D printed designs)4. Engineering research (Highly capable of performing engineering calculations and research into engineering / manufacturing solutions and methods)I am looking to push the boundaries of innovation in the transportation industry and I am committed to driving advancements in safety and sustainability in the field of structural engineering of vehicles while continuously seeking opportunities for professional growth and development. Mikk-Markus Imala work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Mechanical Engineer, Project Lead Engineer | Automotive Structural Design, Panel Design Specialist
Leading the chassis structural design of an L7 category city car with an emphasis on passenger safety and lightweight solutions in an international project to build combined 3 cars for demos and crash tests. Over the span of the 2-year project, I designed and prepared the chassis for production in combination with the results of non-linear crash-test analyses and developed the work the design team had done on A-surfaces to make body panels and interior panels into a cohesive automotive section book. Additionally, I integrated rapid prototyping methods into the design and led the on-site structural assembly of the cars.
Project Engineer, Structural Engineer | Machinery Integration, Hull Girder Structural Validation
Retrofitting and integrating exhaust gas management systems into functioning cruise ships. Creating plans to modify existing structures for space clearance and designing foundations to integrate machinery with the ship structures. Performing Finite Element Analysis of the designed structures, creating documentation for approval from classification societies, and preparation of manufacturing drawings. Performing finite element analysis across various naval and harbor structures for the validation of the structural design.
Product Development Engineer
Ideation and 3D modelling interactive science exposition attractions that showcased required scientific phenomena.
