Uudistunut Jääkiekkomuseo vihittiin käyttöön syyskuussa 2001. Suomen Jääkiekkomuseota ylläpitää Suomen Jääkiekkomuseo ry., joka on perustettu 14.6.1979. Yhdistyksen perustava sopimusasiakirja allekirjoitettiin Tampereella 17.8.1979 ja yhdistys rekisteröitiin 17.3.1982. Sen tarkoituksena on kerätä, tallentaa, tutkia sekä asettaa näytteille suomalaisen jääkiekkoilun historiaa ja perinnettä erityisesti sitä varten perustetussa Suomen Jääkiekkomuseossa.
