  • Virginia Commonwealth University
    Mentor Coordinator
Virginia Commonwealth University Aug 2012 - May 2013
    Richmond, Va, Us
I worked with four different mentoring programs providing varying levels of support: VCU AmeriCorps, The Carver Promise, The Carver After School Program, and Lobs and Lessons. For all programs I recruited, designed and developed training, and then trained volunteers. Most recruited came from the university. For Lobs and Lessons, I brought paid college students that I managed, as well as volunteers (whom I trained), to help once/week. With:VCU AmeriCorps I acted as a trainer in the best practices of mentoring sponsored by Virginia Mentoring Partnership. I supported service-members in finding new ways to engage their students, how to face common issues encountered, had one-on-one meetings to discuss specific issues, as well as running segments at in-services once/month. I also helped to interview and select service-members and coordinate day-to-day operations in the office. In addition I helped in program evaluation, surveying the students for what other support I could provide them in the field of mentoring. The Carver Promise, I recruited and trained volunteers for the program, providing opportunities for reflection where there weren't before. I ran an appreciation event for National Mentoring Month, and several closure events as mentoring relationships were winding down for the school year. I planned, marketed, and executed a fundraiser which helped to fund field trips for program participants in the 5th grade. The Carver After School Program, I served as a manager and trainer of paid work-study students, service-learning students, and students mandated to volunteer due to criminal activity. I trained all volunteers before they were allowed to begin working with children, an aspect of the program that was non-existent before I developed it. I managed the schedule and the structure of the day primarily in conjunction with an MSW intern. With paid work-study students I conducted weekly meetings in order to ensure that lines of communication were open.
