MIHE publishes, markets and sell textbooks and online, data-driven, courseware in Study Skills, Social Sciences and Hard Sciences to serve the needs of students and lecturers globally. During my leadership the company transformed from a UK-centric country organisation to a global Business with one team, one P&L and one system landscape. In addition we accelerated product development and solutions tailored to our customer needs. Our sales and marketing efforts increased with the support of a revamped website tied to first in class marketing automation and CRM software (SAAS) outperforming market growth.Member of the UK Publisher Association.

Responsible for Group Strategy and Mergers & Acquisitions, including the sale by EQT to BC Partners in 2013 and the merger with Macmillan Science & Education in 2015 to creates a leading science publishing group with circa EUR 1.5bn in turnover and 13,000 employees. During this time I also developed bookmetrix.com, a online platform for measuring book citations and was involved in other strategic projects

Vision Care (aka Pentavision) was bought by Springer end 2011 as part of the ADIS journals and Database acquisition from Wolters Kluwer. I was made responsible for a smooth transition out of the Wolters Kluwer organization and a strategic assessment of the business. Vision Care is a B2B information company and carries leading eye care trade magazines and specialty publications and produces proprietary eye care meetings. Whilst a robust business, Vision Care’s business model and its core market differ from Springer’s. Under my leadership the company transitioned to a stand-alone business and worked with the existing management team on sale to PentaVision LLC and the management team. The sale materialized early 2013.

Berkeley-based Key Curriculum ('Key') is a K-12 math publisher of textbooks and software. I joined Key in July 2010 to work with local management to transform and re-position the company post 2010 financial crisis. After a strategic review we decided to sell our textbook program during 2011 and reorganise ourselves around our software & online learning tools which allowed us to invest in new a new technology-infrastructure / roadmap and sales and marketing tools: After 12 months Key was an e-company and sales and profitability were up again for the first time in five years. On August 1, 2012 Key and its technology assets were sold to McGraw Hill Education, a leading US-based education publisher.

During this period I led a number of projects including the acquisition of Medical publisher Humana Press, Open Access publisher BioMed Central and the sale of our professional construction publishing assets and Austrian Business to Business titles and distribution agent Minerva. In addition I led the deal team for the sale of Springer to EQT in February 2010.

I worked from September 1993 to February 2005 at the leading Investment Bank of the Netherlands, ABN AMRO in different departments. After my 6 month traineeship I started in 1994 at Equity Capital Markets where I worked on Initial Public Offerings and equity private placements. In 1999 I moved to Credit Structuring where I advised Executive Boards on complex financing structures and end of 2001 I was appointed Senior Vice President Corporate Finance and led a team of professionals working on mergers and acquisitions in the international media space. My client base included TV production company Endemol (now Endemol Shine), regional newspaper company Wegener (now De Persgroep), national newspaper publisher De Telegraaf Mediagroup (now MediaHuis Groep), data company VNU (now Nielsen), educational publisher Malmberg (now Sanoma Learning), trade and educational publisher Veen Bosch & Keuning, science publisher Taylor & Francis (now Informa), science publisher Reed Elsevier (now RELX) and national newspaper publisher PCM.Between May and September 2001 I was, as an interim assignment, responsible for the project team which helped ABN AMRO’s Executive Board defining an appropriate B2B e-commerce strategy for the Bank.
