Agribusiness Development Manager (Northern Australia)
Accepting a transfer from National Indigenous Pastoral Enterprises (NIPE), within this role, I worked closely with traditional owners (TOs) of community-held land in WA and NT.This included liaising with and earning the trust of TOs at 15+ cattle stations to provide practical advice regarding all aspects of pastoral operations, in order to support agribusiness success and long-term sustainability. In doing so, I worked closely with Indigenous people, groups, communities, organisations, government agencies and stakeholders to plan, operate and manage successful agribusiness enterprises. In addition, I reviewed business potential, and developed a range of business structures and potential funding sources to achieve economic, environmental and socially sustainable outcomes.I also assisted in implementing, monitoring, evaluating and reporting on progress, including identifying issues and developing collaborative solutions. Most notably, I built the capacity and capability of TO of community-held land across Australia by providing planning, operating and management advice, including organising training programs.I also developed a range of business structures and potential funding sources to achieve economic, environmental and socially sustainable outcomes for community-held properties. In addition, I presented to community groups to increase understanding of Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC) initiatives.
General Manager
Within this role, I was responsible for operational and business management for Roebuck Plains Station, a 294,000 ha breeding property running 24 000 head, and supplying the live export market out of Broome. Most notably, I consistently increased the value of the station and exceeded revenue targets by implementing a range of initiatives, including a new supplementary program contributing to a 10% calving rate increase.I also introduced a new herd and muster recording system, which has since been implemented across all NIPE cattle stations. In addition, I implemented a BJD management plan, in conjunction with the DAFWA, and worked with DAFWA to develop the Carbon Capture Project 2009.I also worked with the World Wildlife Fund to develop the Environmental Management Plan 2007, and with FESA to implement Controlled Aerial Burn Programs.Overseeing management of a training centre established in 2007 on the station, I saw the successful graduation of 40+ Indigenous trainees in eight years.Recruiting and inducting all staff, including implementing the National Indigenous Employment Strategy 2009 – 2010, I increased Aboriginal employment on the station from 20% in 2006 to 65% in 2015, excluding trainees. In addition, I supported a close and respectful working relationship between the station and The Yaruwu People of Broome, especially during the divestiture of the station to the Yaruwu. This included sensitively managing areas of environmental and cultural significance within the station, in conjunction with the cattle operation.Well respected in the industry, I hosted many political and industry visitors, including the Malaysian Minister for Agriculture, and a House of Representatives Committee Inquiry into Indigenous Affairs.Engagements also included the Northern Agricultural and Water Taskforce, North Australian Beef Research Council, Livecorp Board, the WA Pastoral Lands Board, and the WA Minister for Agriculture, as well as peak industry groups.
Manager Comely Station
Within this role, I was responsible for all aspects of operational and business management for Comely Station, a 22 949 ha fattening block in the Central Highlands region of QLD. In doing so, I ensured Cattle Care Accreditation was maintained, including all documentation regarding HGP and chemical use.The station ran between 9 000 and 12 000 steers, bred on the company’s northern properties. It had a permanent staff of seven, as well as contractors for fencing and helimustering. I led the preparation of cattle to meet domestic and export specifications, including backgrounding steers for feedlots, and managing all logistics reacted to delivering sale cattle. In addition, I developed bangtail muster summaries, monthly reports and annual reports, reporting to the General Manager and Board of Directors, and presenting at annual Managers’ Conferences.I also recruited and inducted all employees, implemented a new collective employment agreement, and set and ensured the meeting of sales targets and weights. Most notably, I implemented nutrition programs for different classes of cattle, including the use of Norprim medicators, resulting in increased weight gain and earlier turn off.I also improved the general infrastructure of the property, including clearing brigalow to increase pasture, and improving fences and water supply infrastructure. In addition, I effectively maintained waters, Mono and Southern Cross borehole pumps and Comet windmills.
