Profile bio

About Millicent Rice

I am a recent graduate of Newcastle University, where I earned a First Class degree in Biomedical Genetics. My academic journey ignited a passion for researching cancer and rare diseases. This passion was further nurtured during a transformative summer internship at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Mitochondrial Research. There, I collaborated with esteemed researchers on a study examining protein levels in patients with mitochondrial myopathies before and after resistance exercise intervention. This experience deepened my understanding of mitochondrial diseases and their treatment. For my dissertation project, I conducted cancer research focused on studying Down Syndrome patients with BCR-ABL1-like acute lymphoblastic leukaemia at the Wolfson Childhood Cancer Research Centre under the guidance of Dr Lisa Russell. This project provided me with an opportunity to deepen my understanding of cancer biology. I honed my laboratory skills in techniques such as PCR, alongside managing sample logistics and processing finance requests, additional to refining my proficiency in data analysis. Integrating laboratory findings with meticulously collated patient data, I explored trends in the specific variant under investigation, analysing its correlation with clinical and diagnostic factors.Beyond academics, I served as the Welfare Secretary for the Newcastle University Pole and Aerial Society. In this role, I organized wellness and mental health events, fostering a supportive community. I also taught and mentored beginner classes, honing my leadership and communication skills.Additionally, I recently volunteered at a local café, supporting young people with disabilities and learning needs. By encouraging and assisting them in their duties, I helped build their confidence and skill set. Through adaptable communication and strong rapport-building, I strived to create a nurturing and safe environment.
