About METCOA cutting-edge voluntary school desegregation program established in 1966, the METCO program was designed to provide the opportunity for children from racially-imbalanced schools in Boston and children from isolated suburban schools to learn together in an integrated public school setting. Over the last half century, METCO has aided the graduation of more than 100,000 alumni and supported 3,300 students annually from Boston and Springfield with more than 30 suburban school districts from across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.Throughout its history, METCO has provided students with a strong academic foundation, as well as an environment rich in cultural, educational, ethnic and racial diversity. In addition, it strives to increase the diversity and reduce the racial isolation in suburban school districts so that students from different backgrounds can learn from each other in meaningful ways.
