Hi! I am a final year Marine Biology (BSc) student at the University of Plymouth, who is currently working as a Research Ranger for Seal Research Trust. In my free time, I am undertaking a PADI Divemaster internship with DIVE UK. I recently completed my placement year, where I undertook a 6 month internship at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary with both the Animal Care Team and the Events team, as well as volunteering abroad at the Olive Ridley Project Rescue Center in the Maldives. I also begun volunteering with the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and Solent Seascape Project in my free time!Instagram page: @mbio_millsI am currently a certified PADI Rescue Diver with EFR and 90+ dives logged, as well as having my PB2 license with RYA and sailing experience. I am a qualified Marine Mammal Medic with BDMLR and a volunteer with the Cornwall/Devon Wildlife Trust Marine Strandings Network! I currently volunteer with the HIWWT & SSP through attending intertidal surveys and events stalls, I also input the data collected from the surveys, this work goes towards the SSP! I have also recently been asked to lead a talk on Seals of the South - which I am so excited about!!!! From my placement year, I have experience in Education & Outreach in conservation and sustainability from my internship with the Events Team at CSS - this included talks and tours of numerous pools, school group activities and tours including arts and crafts, off site outreach and more. I also have Animal Care experience from my internship with CSS first as a volunteer, then progressing to an intern. This involved dietary preparation, feeding, administering and preparing medication, transferring, assisting tube feeding, taking temperatures and more.I have also worked with the UoP in the Peer Assisted Learning Scheme (PALS) which involves mentoring 1st year students through the beginning of their degree via scheduled sessions.I have loved volunteering my whole life and it has taken me to many places around the globe - I travelled to the Maldives with ORP, working at their Turtle rescue center, this combined my experiences from CSS and built on them more! I have also travelled to Kerala, India where we built a house for a local family, who’s house was destroyed by a flood, and in our days off we taught English lessons to students in year 7. I have also volunteered at Freedom Elephant Sanctuary in Chiang Mai, Thailand.I hope to be able to use my experiences to educate and broaden horizons of others and increase awareness of marine conservation.

Day to day, this internship involved dietary preparation, feeding of residents, resident training and health checks, undertaking sanitation procedures, intake of pups, assisting vet visits, using multiple feeding procedures on pups, pup releases, medication preparation and administration, learning to take and input data into logs and systems, public engagement, team work, undertaking enrichment activities, and more!

A 3 month internship in both the Education Department and the Animal Care Team at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. I split my week between the Education department as an intern and the Animal Care Team as a regular volunteer! The Education Intern role involves timetabled talks on site, educational school group tours, leading volunteer groups for a day, seal pup rescue demonstrations, conservation activities, as well as off-site conservation promotion. Volunteer duties on site were completed daily such as site litter picks and general cleaning. The volunteer role with the Animal Care Team was hands on animal husbandry and was an incredible introduction into the world of animal care and welfare. It showed me a different side to conservation which I have thoroughly enjoyed and am looking to continue in the future! This placement gave me real world experience of a UK based charity, and everyday showed me the effect that the sanctuary has on its resident animals, its rescued pups and the guests through the doors. Those who come and visit fall in love with the animals as well as see real change! Especially through the Rescue, Rehabilitation and Release program for vulnerable seal pups.

This role involved being a mentor for 1st year Marine Biology (BSc) students, as well as Marine Biology with Coastal Ecology / Oceanography students (BSc). I provided a 1-2 hour session every 2 weeks on topics including public speaking/presentation techniques, coursework assistance/tips and tricks, R Studio coding, exam prep, revision techniques, time management, note taking, as well as general life sessions - where are the best places to eat in Plymouth?! It also entails a 1 hour de-brief per week where we go over the previous sessions and plan ahead to make the most of the sessions.PALS has massively improved my confidence of public speaking as well as in my capability of meeting tasks and deadlines. It has also brought me closer to course mates and lecturers, and has allowed me to pass forward any notes or concerns from the 1st year students.
