I had no intention to be the Founder and CEO.Then in March 2006 everything changed. I had been a self employed vibration analyst for 12 years and had been using the data collector for over 10 years.The data collector still worked, it collected reliable data, it weighed 6 lbs and had a vast 1 Mb storage capacity. The wonderful old horse I had been riding was, well getting old. Then one day a a golf ball size rock from a conveyor system took aim and that was it. The old monochrome screen had displayed its last.Now it was time to upgrade. It was time to spend the big bucks. After all it did all the same things as the old one and “had a color screen” and the best part, it would no longer work with my 12 year old analysis software. I was almost out of business! $25k for the new color screen data collector, $10k for the software. Oh did I mention that everything was different, a steep learning curve, database upgrade. To install the software, “have your IT guy call our IT guy”. I could see my profitability slipping way. How long would it take to recover? 6 months maybe a year? Oooouch!Idea, What about changing to a different horse? That may save some dollars and if I was going to have to learn new software anyway... Lets take a look and see what was out there. I found 3 other 10-12 year old horses. No color screen, different software, oh and the best part a brand new clean database, with several thousand machines to setup! Then where would I be? The same place I was before the rock.Well, “this is the 21st century”, there should certainly be some “new technology” that could be leveraged to revive my business. Come check us out. During this time I began to wonder what it might take to be self employed by providing a vibration measurement based predictive maintenance consulting service. I remember having a discussion with my wife one evening that if a certain set of circumstances were to come about, "a guy could start a consulting services company and make a go of it"It is like I put my order out to the universe and 18 months later, here I was looking at that very specific set of circumstances I had described to my wife. When it was time to make the decision to become self employed the real question was; "if I don't do this I will always wonder if I could have".With that question answered, I left what I thought was the best job I had ever had. I moved from Tennessee to Utah, moved into my in-laws basement. Turns out that was a pretty smart move. What better motivation to make a business work than to be able to move out of my in-laws basement. Well that took 9 months! This has turned into 23 years of the funnest job a guy could have.I have since done work in 48 out of 50 states in the USA. Traveled to the South Pacific, Japan, South America, Central America, Africa, Canada, Europe, China, India and Mongolia. It has been a fun ride.With the creation of Maintenance Technology Solutions, we now have a business plan in place to help anyone, who is working for a company to purchase a franchise from us that gives you a turnkey Vibration consulting business, which is entirely modeled after what I have learned, running this business for the past 23 years.
