Profile bio

About Mimi Becker

My goal is to help my students build capacity (knowledge, skills, experience, commitment to quality work) so they will be capable of both engagement and leadership in helping to solve challenging complex problems that require solutions that foster sustainable relationships between people and their life support systems and employ collaborative decision processes that engage the relevant stakeholders in framing, implementing and adapting those choices, as needed. This requires an interdisciplinary approach that links ecosystem/earth system science to decision making (politics and policy) at the relevant scale. My approach is based on sound theory, but emphasizes applied problem solving in the real world. I work on problems of watershed/water quality management, land conservation and protection, sustainable communities, policy implementation and evaluation, climate change adaptation, public participation and conflict management, and environmental communication and education. In this context, I was the co-founder of the UNH-EcoQuest New Zealand Field Studies Program for Undergraduates, The Marine Resource Education Project (MREP) The M.S. Program in Environmental Education, and the TIDES M.S. program while at UNH. Prior to that I was a creator and the Project Director of a the Binational Decisions for the Great Lakes Program, that was designed to engage decision makers in all sectors in learning together about the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement's ecosystem approach for restoring the Great Lakes Basin's Areas of Concern, and then providing leadership for its implementation.
