Teaching and researching public relations, crisis communication, environmental communication, and journalism practice.

We are the hub for all information local families, or families wanting to be local might need in Boone, NC and the High Country. We are parents, professionals and lovers of nature.

I am a teacher of media theory and application in journalism and public relations. I also advise the student-run regional publication Overlooked in Appalachia. I mentor and teach undergraduate and graduate students and teach journalism, public relations, and crisis communication courses.In my research I use a qualitative and narrative lens, to understand the actions and interactions of public relations practitioners and journalists in crisis and disaster situations. I use communication ecology to examine these relationships and build theory using textual analysis, surveys and interviews. My research focuses on the role of strategic communicators and journalists in shaping crisis and disaster preparation and response. My work has been published in journals including American Behavioral Scientist, Disasters, Journalism Practice, and Journalism Studies. My work provides insight into how people respond to science communication, and disaster information. I plan to continue to submit my research to grants in these areas, and to top tier as well as interdisciplinary journals.

Overlooked in Appalachia is an online magazine that publishes two to three times a year. Overlooked is a Student-Run Regional publication focusing on Appalachian Issues in Appalachian Highlands, The Blue Ridge Mountains, and Greater Appalachia.

Appalachian's Research Institute for Environment, Energy, and Economics (RIEEE) was established in November 2008 to enhance opportunities for faculty and students whose research interests involve the environment, energy and economics and especially intersections thereof. We do this by supporting interdisciplinary research clusters, fostering beneficial collaborations and associations, funding student research grants and offering post-award grants management for funded projects.

Researching the news coverage of natural disasters, writing papers and taking courses in journalism and communication. Taught a number of intro journalism and mass communication classes. Graduated in May 2016 with a PhD from the Missouri School of Journalism.

Helped to develop a journalism writing and reading program for sixth grade students at Washington, DC middle school. Students put out two newspapers during the six month period.

Wrote stories for the USIP web, editied Peace Briefs and other publications.Attended events with international speakers including ambassadors and public officials.Took photos and posted stories to USIP website.
