Dr. Mina S. Seif is a Research Structural Engineer in the Structures Group of the Materials and Structural Systems Division (MSSD) of the Engineering Laboratory (EL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Dr. Seif first joined NIST's Structures Group in March 2011 as an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (NIST-ARRA) Postdoctoral Research Associate. Dr. Seif's primary research interests relate to the computational assessment of structural performance under extreme loads, including modeling the response of structural systems beyond local failure to global collapse, particularly under fire-induced heating. The main goal behind his current research is the development of simplified tools and guides for performance-based design of steel structures at elevated temperatures.Prior to joining NIST, Dr. Seif received a M.Sc. followed by a Ph.D. in Civil (Structural) Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University in December of 2010. His research at the Johns Hopkins University focused on the cross-sectional stability of high strength structural steel. Dr. Seif has also earned a M.Sc. degree in Structural Engineering from Cairo University in 2005, where his thesis focused on seismic assessment of reinforced concrete buildings.In addition to his research work, Dr. Seif has teaching and practical engineering experience. He held a teaching position at Cairo University for three years (2002-2005) during which he taught different courses about the Mechanical Properties and Strength of Materials. During the same period of time, he also worked as a part-time design engineer at the Engineering Consulting And Designing (ECAD) group, conducting computer aided structural modeling and design of buildings and bridges. He currently holds an Adjunct Professor position at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), teaching various courses including: CVEN-419 senior class on Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures, and CVEN-201 on Engineering Mechanics.
