I had heard much about how helpful she was and about how tremendously she cared for her students, so I was overjoyed when I received word that she would be my advisor. Mindy held up to all my expectations and beyond. She was very knowledgeable about the psychology department and made me feel at ease even when I was stressed out (this was a great change from my previous advisor). With her help, I was able to tentatively plan out my last 2 years at Pitt. And with the exception of 1 or 2 classes, I stuck to that plan. Mindy helped me find opportunities that were a perfect fit with my interests. During my senior year, she helped me secure an internship at the Day School at the Children’s Institute. This experience taught me much about special education and the unique needs of children with all kinds of disabilities. She also encouraged me to complete an honors thesis, which I defended successfully. I was very nervous and afraid about the whole idea at first, but Mindy believed in me. I graduated with honors, earning a Bachelor of Philosophy in Psychology degree. All I learned during my internship and while working on my thesis proved helpful when I later applied for a 2-year pre-doctoral fellowship at the Marcus Autism Center (Emory University) in Atlanta. Mindy informed all of her students of this opportunity, but made sure to tell me personally as well because she knew of my interest in working with this population. Thanks to Mindy, I was offered the position and accepted. Now, as my fellowship is coming to a close – I only have one day left – I am even more grateful for all Mindy has done for me, starting at the end of my sophomore year through the present. She learns about her students individually and appropriately guides them in the direction they want to go. And her bubbly personality and kind spirit are enough to make any student feel welcome and like they are doing the best they can. I owe much of my academic success to Mindy. I am grateful for her dedication, and I am excited to begin graduate school later this month. I will be working towards a PhD in Public Policy at Georgia State University while also fulfilling a graduate research assistantship in the Georgia Health Policy Center’s Center of Excellence for Children’s Behavioral Health. All of my undergraduate experiences, heavily influenced by Mindy’s support and guidance, have worked well to get me to this point. Thank you, Mindy!
