I joined the staff of a nearly 30,000-circulation daily a completely green 20-year-old who knew nothing about design or editing and blossomed under great mentors. Ever-willing to learn, my responsibilities grew along with my ability to keep up with the workload of a thriving newspaper. During my tenure, I have been responsible for the design of every print product it has produced. From the paper's front page, sports, religion, business, entertainment and Ad Astra sections, to special projects like Discover Kansas - I have done it all. I assumed a position, custom-created by management, where I was shared between two departments - news and advertising in order to become an asset to both. The job rapidly became a masterclass in teamwork, diplomacy and time management. I was responsible for mathematically configuring the paper and assigning color placement while coordinating requests for color and ad placement with news designers.
