As a peer academic mentor, my experience has been both fulfilling and enriching as I actively engage with mentees in navigating their academic journeys. One of my primary responsibilities involves assisting mentees in identifying their academic and personal goals, fostering an environment that encourages self-discovery and growth. In moments of urgency, I play a crucial role in identifying and referring matters to the relevant student support departments, such as Student Support Services, Disability Unit, and FYE team, ensuring that mentees receive timely and appropriate assistance. Moreover, I consistently encourage students to proactively communicate with their lecturers or tutors and to keep me informed about their academic progress, facilitating a collaborative approach to academic success. Keeping meticulous records of each interaction with a mentee is a key aspect of my role, allowing for accurate monitoring of their progress and providing insights for continuous improvement in the mentorship process.
