Dr. Han has long been engaged in the research and technological development in the electrochemical conversion devices including proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), water electrolysis (alkaline and PEM types), electrochemical sensors (H2, O2, and CO), Redox flow battery (for energy storage) and related fields, since the 1990s. As Chief Principal Investigator, he undertook China’s "The 9th Five-Year Key Programs – PEMFC Technology project" under the Ministry of Science and Technology of China to develop and demonstrate China's first 30kW PEMFC prototype system in 1996. Since 2007, he has been actively involved in the establishment of the Clean Energy Research Centre at TP, and undertaken as PI or Co-PI for a number of research projects, funded from National Research Foundation (NRF), Ministry of Education, and Energy Market Authority (EMA) etc. He’s invented various new technologies regarding of PEMFC, hydrogen generation and redox flow battery. These technologies have been licensed and commercialized by both local and overseas companies including from Singapore, China and Europe. His best achievement is the development of World’s Smallest and Lightest Fuel Cell technology in the kilowatt range. This core technology of PEMFC has been licensed to Duralite Power, a spinoff company from TP set up in 2015. He has published 80 journal papers and applied for 30 patents on fuel cell technology. Many of the core patents have been granted in the US, Europe, China and Singapore. He was awarded the Singapore MOE Innergy Awards (Gold) 2019 for his innovative development of ultra-light PEMFC, Public Sector Transformation 2020 “Exemplary Innovator Award”, and Who's Who in Engineering Singapore 2020.
