I used to splurge whenever it's payday. Back then I had the idea that since I am already investing in Unit Trust via my EPF, so my retirement fund is safe and just continue my lifestyle as is until I reach 55, I will withdraw my EPF and just travel around the world.But one day, I came across this article written by a financial analyst. There, the header says "You need more than 1 Million to retire in today's world." More than 1M? Really? As I continued reading the article, it made a lot of sense. The writer analysed that no doubt as long we we still work, we could earn our income but as you earn more, you spend more and incur more expenses which increases your debts. And people these days would spend their time and money on lifestyle. Cafes, malls, online shopping etc. And for our retirement fund, due to inflation, by the time you retire, most of your retirement fund would probably go into debts settlement and how much do you think you have before your money runs out? Look at more and more old people still working. Can you really stop working at the age of 55? Definitely it's not enough to just by using your EPF to grow your retirement fund!And for those who have kids. Even local education fee is getting more and more expensive now with the inflation and the ever rising cost of living.Here comes the questions:- 1. How are you going to use your money to earn more money while managing the risk?2. What is your financial planning strategy for yourself (for the single ones) / yourself + your kids / yourself + your kids + parents? 3. Do you think you can retire in peace?4. How many more years you plan to work after your retirement age just so you can clear off your debts and live comfortably?5. What is your definition of comfortable life?And if you do invest, do you put all your eggs in one basket?
