  • Ming Tan Consulting
    Life Science Product Development Expert
    Ming Tan Consulting 2003 - 2014
I provided microfluidic-based disposable cartridge product development services, incorporating engineering design, rapid prototyping, assay optimization and manufacturing scale-up. With my expertise in microfluidic device engineering, material science and chemistry, I rapidly designed and developed bio-assay based consumable cartridges, integrating engineering design with material compatibility and assay performance requirements. My clients included BD Biosciences, NASA Ames, Lawrence Livermore National Labs, BioNEMS, Genia, Wafergen, Wave 80 Biosciences, and Gel Company. Examples of projects completed: - Designed, prototyped and tested microfluidic cartridges for a nanopore-based sequencing system, improving pore yield three fold - Developed surface modification methods for plastic cartridges to allow uniform flow, and reduce non-specific adsorption - Established and optimized a qPCR microchip manufacturing process, increased yields by three fold and reduced cost per chip over five fold - Provided design, prototyping and evaluation of a whole blood, cell-counting point-of-care testing cartridge, collaborated with assay development and instrument design engineers to ensure completion of all project milestones on- schedule - Developed and optimized the reagent release and mixing mechanism for a diagnostic product line - Designed, prototyped and tested multiple micro-fluidic systems for growth study of cells, nematodes, and microalgae in space science applications
  • Bio-Rad Laboratories
    Product Manager
    Bio-Rad Laboratories 2007 - 2008
    Hercules, Ca, Us
Defined market position and product development strategy for the consumable components of an SPR-based protein interaction microarray system, targeting antibody and small molecule pharmaceutical companies. - Coordinated product launch of a high performance bio-sensor chip - Developed promotional materials, including research papers and application notes - Met with PIs and gave conference presentations to grow awareness
  • Eclipse Sciences
    Director Of Product Development
    Eclipse Sciences 2004 - 2006
I co-founded a start-up point-of-care diagnostic company targeting cancer and sepsis detection using ultra high sensitivity electrochemical sensor arrays. - Served as PI on a NSF SBIR Phase I grant to develop a miniaturized diagnostic product based on high sensitivity electrochemical detection for oligo and protein assays - Conducted market research and key opinion leader interviews for business plan development and fund raising efforts
  • Zyomyx
    Product Development Manager
    Zyomyx 2000 - 2003
Established and led microfluidic device prototyping and product development efforts for the Zyomyx protein biochip product line. Designed and developed product, directing a 12-person cross-functional project team. Worked with OEM company to design an instrument. Delivered $600K of equipment and consumable sales.
  • Sandia National Laboratories
    Senior Member Of Technical Staff
    Sandia National Laboratories 1994 - 2000
    Albuquerque, Nm, Us
Conducted studies to advance research and development, including demonstrating electrochemical detection of ultra- low concentration molecules separated by capillary electrochromatography; conceiving, designing and fabricating a novel linear response pH sensor using a polymer coated quartz crystal microbalance; developing new materials and micro-fabrication processes for high aspect ratio micromachining technology (LIGA). Negotiated and developed business relationships with government and industrial clients and technology partners.
