From researching the cause and extent of access token abuse on Facebook to building an application to support the generation of ETL scripts for a major bank's Data Administrators, I have worked closely with both academic and industry experts on a diverse set of challenges which, I am confident, have thoroughly prepared me to handle the unique challenges that a team at a modern tech company faces on a regular basis. Over the last 3 years, I have been working as a Research Assistant at the University of Chicago under the supervision of Ariel Feldman. Specifically, I have been the lead researcher of the Web Transparency project, designing and implementing a crawler that extracts JavaScript samples from the web. I then designed and implemented a series of clustering algorithms to track functionally important changes in JavaScript on the web over a 6 month period. For my undergraduate thesis, I worked as part of a team consisting of researchers from The University of Iowa and Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) on a project that eventually leads the Best Paper winning paper published in IMC 2017. As a member of a 3-person team, I worked on identifying and measuring key vulnerabilities in Facebook’s application infrastructure that exposed unsuspecting users to networks of bots generating inorganic activity on the social media platform. Starting from a single paragraph summarizing the problem statement, the project eventually evolved into a large scale study made up of several moving parts, analyzing data belonging to millions of Facebook users across the world. With collaborators across two different time zones and a less than limited budget, the often exhausting but ultimately rewarding 12 month endeavor was an exercise in stretching minimal resources, conducting marathon coding sessions, and perhaps most importantly making precise plans but being open to last-minute modifications.
