I am currently a graduate student at the University of Alberta. My research involves the conversion of methanol to lipids via microorganisms. By working in a highly interdisciplinary lab, I learn and apply various skills during my research, ranging from microbiological techniques such as aseptic techniques, microbial cell culture, bioreactor operation, whole genome sequencing, and bioinformatics, to chemistry lab skills such as lipid extraction, and gas, liquid, and thin layer chromatography.In the past, I have gained nearly 2 years of industrial research experience by working in research and development labs at Lallemand Inc. (Montreal, Canada), and the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology (Hanoi, Vietnam). My previous roles include extensive work with yeast and bacterial cultures using bench-top and pilot-scale bioreactors, as well as the optimization of the culturing and preservation thereof.
