In fact, this was a crucial period in which we successfully concluded an agreement with Mitsubishi Estate to move the Club premises to a new location in 2018 under highly favorable financial terms.

As Chair of the Freedom of the Press Committee, I advised the FCCJ Board of Directors on issues affecting media coverage in Japan. One lasting accomplishment from my term in office was the initiative to launch the Freedom of the Press Prize initiative. It was now become a celebrated event at the FCCJ.

In the first year I was a television correspondent, responsible for on-camera reports as well as interviewing and scriptwriting. In the second year these duties expanded to overall production of all stories from Japan. This included reports on the 3.11 disaster, immediately on the day itself as well as in the dramatic months that followed with the Fukushima nuclear crisis and much else.

The Shingetsu Institute for the Study of Japanese-Islamic Relations was highly active in this period, issuing hundreds of newsletters to its members on topics both historical and contemporary. It had a very good reputation and a loyal following of several hundred scholars and others, but its activities had to be discontinued when I made the transition from academia to journalism, and the time to develop it disappeared.

This was a full-time position on a contract basis. As it is a public city university, I was in most respects regarded as a "public servant." The classes I taught combined English-language learning with Middle Eastern history and politics.

Co-founded and owned the only Turkish restaurant in Kitakyushu, which was at times the only such restaurant in all of Kyushu. Handed full ownership over to co-founder Barbaros Evren, who continues to run the restaurant to this day.
