About Michael Penn
I am a journalist and scholar who was based in Japan for 26 years, and continue to run two Japan-centric news agencies. In the summer of 2023, I moved to Galesburg, Illinois, to become Visiting Journalist in Residence at Knox College. As a journalist I both write print news articles and produce news videos. On the video side I have the ability to do it all by myself: reporting the stories, shooting the footage, and editing the packages. As a writer I have been at it for decades, from writing short news pieces to compiling my full-length academic book "Japan and the War on Terror," at over 300 pages.Overall, my core skills involve deep understanding and knowledge about world history, contemporary events, and media. I believe that academia can provide nuanced understandings of complex phenomena and that journalism involves seizing on core elements and communicating them to the public in broadly understandable forms.
Listed skills include Journalism, Editing, International Relations, Politics, and 20 others.

In the first year I was a television correspondent, responsible for on-camera reports as well as interviewing and scriptwriting. In the second year these duties expanded to overall production of all stories from Japan. Executive Director
The Shingetsu Institute for the Study of Japanese-Islamic Relations was highly active in this period, issuing hundreds of newsletters to its members on topics both historical and contemporary. It had a very good reputation and a loyal following of several hundred scholars and others, but its activities had to be discontinued when I made the transition from academia to journalism, and the time to develop it disappeared.

This was a full-time position on a contract basis. As it is a public city university, I was in most respects regarded as a "public servant." The classes I taught combined English-language learning with Middle Eastern history and politics.
