Mira-Lisa Katz conducts research focused on face-to-face and blended professional learning and literacy at the secondary and post-secondary levels, develops tools for student and teacher learning, and disseminates research findings. She served as a content specialist for the NAEP 2026 Reading Framework Update at WestEd and was a co-chair and then Vice President for CASEL’s SEL Providers Council Steering Committee from 2019-2022. Before returning to WestEd in 2016, Katz was professor of English at Sonoma State University where she taught English Education and Applied Linguistics courses to pre-service ELA teachers. She co-authored CSU’s 11th and 12th grade Expository Reading and Writing Curriculum (ERWC), now taught in over half of California’s high schools. Katz has received honors and awards for her literacy and arts education research. Editor of a book on multimodal learning titled Moving Ideas: Multimodal and Embodied Learning in Communities and Schools, she also served from 2018-2020 as co-editor of the Leading Literacy Change column for the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy. Mira earned an MA and PhD in language and literacy education from UC Berkeley, an MFA in dance/creative practice from Saint Mary's College, and a BA in French and linguistics from Mills College.
