My daughter, Scarlett, was diagnosed with a rare genetic mutation called GABRA1 at the age of 2. We learned quickly that her rare disease had no cure, no community, and no future treatments in sight. Since her diagnosis, I have pushed and researched for possible solutions for her condition which can cause development and intellectual delays, hypotonia, strabismus, epilepsy, autism, and behavioral issues. With the recent developments in technology and advancements in genetics, we have the tools available to discover treatments but lack the business models, biotechnology collaborations, and financial support to do so. That's why I started Scarlett's GABRA1 Village; a patient support community and GABA-A Alliance, a globally supported non-profit to educate, raise awareness, and fight for a cure.We need your support. Parents of children with rare diseases have to become their child's advocate, learn their disease and the inter-related systems they affect, and fight through the red tape of the health-care system.
