About Miranda K. Workman, Phd
I am an animal behavior and welfare professional and anthrozoologist with experience in multiple areas including academic and informal education, research, animal sheltering, animal behavior and welfare (multiple species), nonprofit and for-profit business leadership, and consulting. As part-time faculty at Canisius College, I teach about and engage in applied research about human-animal-environment relationships, animal sheltering and welfare, and ethics. My research has been published and presented in various venues, including a talk for TEDxBuffalo and presentations at sociological conferences. Current research is focused on multispecies families, grief surrounding animal death, and euthanasia decision-making, including an international research project focused on behavioral euthanasia for companion animals. I was elected to a 3-year term to the Animals & Society Section Council for the American Sociological Association in 2019.As a certified animal behavior professional, I have run an animal behavior consulting and daycare company. I have also worked as a shelter animal behavior professional in an individual shelter, as a shelter consultant, and as the program content developer and lead trainer-mentor for the Cat Pawsitive program deployed nationally in over 100 different shelters across the United States. I previously served as President of the Board for an international certifying organization for animal behavior trainers and behavior consultants (CCPDT) and a Division Chair for another international certifying and educational organization for animal behavior consultants (IAABC). My educational background includes a PhD from the University at Buffalo (2021:Sociology: Dissertation Titled: "Are Fido and Fluffy Family? Negotiating Multispecies Families) and a Masters of Science from Canisius College (2014: Anthrozoology: one quantitative and one qualitative theses). I have also completed the Women in Leadership, Principles of Leading Transformational Nonprofits, Nonprofit Business Administration, and Leading Nonprofit Boards certificates from the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame.My professional experience includes but is not limited to: Entrepreneurship, Non-Profit Leadership, Animal Behavior & Training, Animal Sheltering, Public Speaking, Qualitative & Quantitative Research including expertise in survey design and in-depth interviewing, Curriculum Development, and Educational Instruction.
