Profile bio

About Mireya Navarro

I am a communications strategist, editor and writer committed to social justice and journalistic excellence. At the Brennan Center for Justice, I'm leading the effort to expand outreach to Spanish-language media and Latino voters and to deepen our collaboration with Latino organizations and advocacy allies in the areas of voting rights, election security, redistricting/gerrymandering, fair representation, national security and reforming the role of big money in politics. I'm a former New York Times reporter with extensive experience investigating and covering major news stories in the United States and Latin America, and I was part of the team that won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting for "How Race is Lived in America," a series on race relations. As the country's demographics gradually shift away from a dominant white majority, I am increasingly focused on how to respond to the needs of a more racially interwoven and multicultural democracy. I have taught and mentored young journalists at the Times and as an adjunct professor at the graduate journalism schools of the City University of New York and Columbia University, and at the New School. I led, as executive director, a nonprofit, Community Reporting Alliance, that pairs up journalism high school students with public libraries to cover and publish local news in communities that have lost their newspapers. I have regularly appeared on radio and television and, having written two nonfiction books -- Stepdog and Green Wedding -- know how to run publicity and social media campaigns in both English and Spanish. I'm a bilingual public speaker and moderator of panel discussions and public conversations with authors and news makers. I love the theater and live music, and I'm lucky to live in the right city for both. Expertise:-editing and writing-translating complex information into clear communication-storytelling-identifying and articulating a message through media channels and video -developing ideas and strategy-investigating and analyzing policy-work with nonprofits-ability to connect with people at all levels-tight organization

Listed skills include Journalism, Blogging, Copy Editing, Editing, and 24 others.
