About Miriam García García

PhD in Architecture, Landscape Architect, Urban Planner, Founder and Director of LAND LAB - landscape laboratory. S.L., office based in Barcelona. I collaborate in different projects destined to the promotion and development of spatial planning, landscape and urban design. Many of these works have international recognition such as the Prize of the XII Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism or Good Practice 2012 of the Un-Habitat Committee. In addition to this professional experience, I worked at the public administration for the Government of Cantabria, as head of the General Directorate of Urbanism and Territorial Planning, at the beginning of my career (2003-2007).I combine professional practice with research and teaching on both sides of the Atlantic. I have been a researcher, visiting professor and lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard (US), Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana and Universidad de los Andes (CO); Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (DO), Universidad de Roma La Spienza and Politécnico de Milán (IT); and the University of Cyprus (UCY), as well as at several Spanish universities. I have also been Director of the Degree in Landscaping at the Universidad Camilo José Cela in Madrid. I am currently professor in the Master in Landscape Design at the Pontifical Bolivarian University (CO) as well as in the University Master in Urbanism and Territorial Studies at the National Institute of Public Administration (ES) and in the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (ES). I am also a member of the BINOCULAR research group, Art and Nature Centre, Beulas Foundation (CDAN), Huesca. My research and professional practice are linked to landscape and ecology as drivers of change in plans and projects at multiple scales. In this sense, many of the studies and projects focus on the resilience of coastal environments, urban or metropolitan, to the effects of climate change. My doctoral thesis: Towards the synthetic Metamorphosis of the coast. Designing Resilient Landscapes (2017) has won the Extraordinary Prize for Doctoral Theses from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (academic year 16/17), Honorable Mention from the 2nd European Prize Manuel de Solà-Morales (2019), selected to form part of the Spanish pavilion at the 16th Architecture Biennial held in Venice in 2018 and awarded in the XII Edition of the Biennial Thesis of Architecture organized by Arquia Foundation (2019). I am also a Member of the Assembly for Neutral Climate and Intelligent Cities of the European Commission and of the Scientific Committee of Europan Europe.

LARP 701-003 Studio (Department of Landscape Architecture, School of Design). The Galician Studio was made possible thanks to the support of the Secretariat of Maritime Affairs of the Regional Government of Galicia, and Prof, David Gouverneur Co-instructor of the Studio. The Studio focused on the resilience of three small coastal communities which have lived for centuries on fishing, clamming, traditional aquaculture and agriculture. These conditions are currently affected my environmental problems, gradual sea-rise, periodical flooding and the impact of the intrusion of industrialized large scale fish farms with are harming employment, altering local landscapes and cultural practices. The studio is providing, through proposals for the three sites, a broad set of criteria that can inform sustainable practices under a holistic landscape approach.
