Profile bio

About Miriam Meaney

Working in a Catholic school, I aspire to actively promote the integration of Catholic values across the curriculum and in my day to day relationships with staff, students and parents. In my practice, I aim to communicate a love of learning, promoting a positive learning environment reflecting my enthusiasm for and enjoyment of teaching. I regard the school as a place of learning for all and I set high expectations and optimism for learning for myself and the school’s learning community. The best teachers are learners. I believe in fostering this through peer-to-peer learning, mentoring, coaching, engagement in action research and the sharing of practice. Paramount to the work of a teacher is his / her interface with students in the classroom, which is locus for teacher learning. I aim to support teachers as they develop their capacity to teach, recognising that they cannot improve student learning on their own, nor should they because teaching and learning are collaborative processes. Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) provide the support for continuous professional learning through dialogue. They enable the development of a common language and culture for learning for many purposes. Simultaneously, PLCs promote leadership as teachers build their own capacity and refine their practice. The educational landscape within Australia poses great challenge as we respond to contemporary teaching and learning needs and adapt structures to meet the requirements of The Australian Curriculum and AITSL standards. The need to explore models of student engagement such as Understanding by Design, Flip Teaching and Project-based Learning is recognised here. These models focus the school community on making decisions for its educational context. They are, nonetheless, secondary. The essential prerequisite to 21st Century schooling is the growth of a culture that focuses on improved student learning and on the teacher as learner.

Listed skills include Educational Leadership, Educational Technology, K 12, Special Education, and 7 others.

Assistant Principal

Current

Sydney'S Inner West

I work with the Principal and Leadership Team in ensuring a culture of improved learning, which is student-centred. I work with teachers in exploring contemporary teaching models and promoting best practice. Classroom-based improvement is evidence- driven because teachers and students collect, analyse and act upon data to inform future learning. Feedback and evaluation are critical to the work we do. The needs of the student are the core of the work we do. A focus on the wellbeing of our learners ensures that they enjoy learning and make progress.

Leader Of Pedagogy

Catholic Education Office, Sydney

Holy Cross College, Ryde, Sydney, Australia

Contemporary LeadershipIn my role as Leader of Pedagogy, I worked closely with Middle leaders and teachers to identify the best strategies and opportunities to maximise student learning. I supported and promoted improved pedagogy and teaching practice in a practical way through active involvement in curriculum planning and through team teaching. I led and supported the Professional Learning Communities within my school and support teachers in their continual Professional Learning and Development. The Professional Learning focus at the school was on teachers learning through observation and collegial dialogue and I led initiatives to pursue this focus. Particular areas of focus included the embedding of Literacy, Numeracy and ICT into curriculum, involvement in planning for the implementation of the National Curriculum and networking with Primary and Secondary Schools within our sector.
