Member of Group Executive, responsible for supporting and advising the Group CEO, Chairman and Board on the management of all legal, governance and regulatory risk and opportunity across its diverse businesses, including:• leadership and oversight of all legal risk issues and activity, including litigation and investigations;• other legal and regulatory matters and processes, including financial crime, employment, data privacy, product and customer compliance;• key role in culture transformation and people leadership and development, including internal training and coaching programmes• transactional and restructuring activity, including responsibility for competition, capital markets and treasury, corporate strategy (including ring-fencing, Brexit and other structural reform) and M&A;• leadership role in all strategy activity, including the new CEO’s 2020 strategy which for the first time embraced climate change targets, leading to a substantial internal climate and bio-diversity programme, with the benefit of leadership training from Cambridge and Edinburgh Universities;• responsible for management and oversight of significant customer TCF/remediation activity including s166 programmes; • also responsible for other strategic programmes such as: revising governance and risk management frameworks, policies and processes; and the establishment by the banking industry of the Business Banking Resolution Scheme.

• Key adviser to the Group General Counsel, CEO, Chairman and Board on all Group legal matters at a time of intense legal, political and regulatory scrutiny and change post the Global Financial Crisis, including; • leadership and oversight of all group-wide legal risk issues and activity, including litigation and investigations (eg LIBOR, FX, SFO criminal prosecution); • other legal and regulatory matters and processes, including disclosure, financial reporting, financial crime, employment, data privacy, transactional and restructuring activity, competition, capital markets and treasury, and M&A; • cultural development programmes, including the Salz Review, the Banking Standards Board, Barclays new values and accountability regime;• Supported the Group General Counsel with managing the activities and operations of the Barclays Legal function, including all technology, panel, budget and people activities;• Broader Barclays leadership role including membership of various key committees with oversight responsibility for group operations and expenditure, conduct risk, taxation, Africa and disclosure issues.

In this role I had responsibility for all legal, compliance and regulatory issues for Barclays’ Global Retail, Credit Card and Commercial Banking businesses. This included being a member of the GRCB Executive Committee, reporting to the GRCB CEO.

Recognised consistently as a leading corporate finance practitioner in the Legal 500 and Chambers directories with a broad range of corporate, funds, institutional and investment banking clients across the banking, insurance, asset management, energy, oil and gas and other industries, eg acting for EdF on its £12.5bn takeover of British Energy in 2008 and its related JVs with Centrica and China state-owned CGN. Internal roles and responsibilities included joint leadership of the London M&A team, membership of the Audit and Finance Committee, the Strategic Review Committee and the Promotions Committee, as well as being London Head of the Japan Practice Group.

Seconded for two years to provide senior legal and advisory expertise in connection with the Takeover Panel's casework. Responsible for managing advice given and decisions made by the Panel Executive on transactional matters and for giving advice to and assisting the Panel Hearings Committee.
