With a $14M annual budget and over 26 direct and indirect reports (including Management, Staff and Scientists), this role was a culmination of all of my prior work experience and drew on my human resource, administrative, legal, finance and project management skills. In this role I led several major projects, including:• the construction of a $19M state of the art research facility;• the implementation of an online, electronic human resources information system (HRIS); and, • management and oversight of the opening of the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences' final satellite office in Ontario (ICES North).Through the creation of the Research Services Office focused on supporting and growing research in the north, I increased research revenues at HSNRI and Health Sciences North over 150% in the past three years.

This was my new title after we transferred all existing hospital research staff into the newly created corporation devoted to research (now known as HSNRI, but at the time was named the Advanced Medical Research Institute of Canada). During my three years in this role, and as a member of the Senior Leadership Committee, I:• helped to lead the organization and Board of Directors through a significant change in research focus, leadership change and new Board governance structure;• developed operating, human resource and research policies and procedures in a complex environment, particularly due to our close ties with our affiliated hospital; and,• managed the Executive Office and Board of Directors;• created a separate Human Resources Office that I managed, as well as provided direction on operations and research administration of the institute.

This was where the research institute in Sudbury all started. A new role was created at the hospital for a Vice President in Research and I was recruited to support the hospital’s new direction and focus on research. I enjoyed this role and was pleased at how much I relied on my legal background with the creation of a separate corporation (now known as the Health Sciences North Research Institute) and the recruitment and creation of a separate Board of Directors, by-laws and governance structure specifically for research. It was particularly challenging because I had to develop new processes and policies to accommodate our needs and had to integrate them with a wide variety of existing hospital departments and procedures.

This was an interesting position and I had the opportunity to work with a lot of fantastic people. It was especially rewarding for me to be able to help someone see their value in the midst of a stressful and difficult time and help them to move forward to the next phase of their lives.

One of my first formal positions in human resources after my decision to pursue a different career path from law. At OHCOW, I was the Acting Executive Director in the ED’s absence. In addition to managing the organization's finances, I managed and oversaw a unionized team of multi-disciplinary health care professionals as well as visiting physician specialists. I was fortunate to have been asked to participate on the collective bargaining team representing all OHCOW offices throughout Ontario.

After graduating from university, I had been considering law school, but before spending the small fortune I didn’t have on tuition, I wanted to get a better sense of the type of work I would be doing and if I’d even enjoy it. I joined Paquette & Travers back in 1993 as a junior law clerk in family law, preparing pleadings and briefs and quickly progressed from there.
