After receiving a Bachelor's degree in Spanish from the UT Austin in 1999, I worked as a musician, playing in a Latin American combo, which presented traditional and modern music from an array of Spanish-speaking countries. While playing throughout Texas and touring central Mexico, I deepened my appreciation for the extent to which cultural and linguistic variation exist as well as my conviction to continue discovering. Since that point, I have either taught Spanish or taught in Spanish ranging from preschoolers to university students at UT Austin. In 2008, I was voted Teacher of the Year at Odom Elementary and selected by the University of Texas to receive the Rising Star Award. I completed field work in Secondary Spanish as I concurrently obtained a Master of Arts degree in Spanish from Texas State University and became certified as a Bilingual Educator. After having worked in Austin Independent School District as an ESL and Bilingual Third Grade teacher for 14 years, I transitioned to the University of Texas at Austin. I obtained a PhD in Bilingual/Bicultural Education in May, 2020 and am currently a an assistant professor at Texas State University. My research interests include the use of humor as a tool for the mobilization of community cultural wealth amongst minoritized Spanish speakers.
