I have a small but satisfying business which provides printed circuit boards. My customers design them, then send the design files to me for review. I match the design to the most suitable supplier in China, who makes the boards. I have an office in Shenzhen which dispatches the boards out to my customers.

Moving up from my previous software engineering roles, I am now involved in concept development, prototyping, market research, specification gathering, product implementation and testing, and customer acceptance.Obviously I can't give full details of the projects I'm currently working on, but some of the projects I've worked on are porting a 10 year old embedded Linux system to a new motherboard and underlying Linux platform, and a distributed passenger security system for public transport, using an embedded Linux device.

Bartco designs and manufactures side-of-road message boards, often used to inform motorists of roadworks or retail promotions. • Wrote firmware for new features and to fix bugs.

ELS builds PC-based appliances for distributed monitoring of 3G network health. • Developed support infrastructure for back-end servers (iptables, MySQL, PHP, Apache, package updates). • Wrote application code in Python to run on monitoring appliances and back-end servers.

Symstream Technologies produces products which enable ATMs to communicate to a bank's central computer over GSM and 3G wirelessnetworks. • Ported "Buildroot" embedded Linux system to Atmel AT91SAM9 board. • Wrote tools and business processes to allow team to use AT91SAM9 board with minimal effort and learning. • Created build system for four CPU architectures from one codebase. • Initiated daily "stand-up" team status meetings.(Middle six months was leave for study in China)

OPEN Networks is a supplier of ADSL modems and ISDN equipment. • Designed and implemented a scalable multi-product build system. • Contributed to the porting of a web-based CPE management system from BSD to Linux. • Co-developed a Linux-based routing appliance using TI NSP SystemOnChip. • Introduced peer review of software changes to embedded team. • Wrote a compile-time web page preprocessor. • Administered development server.

Extel designs and manufactures "pair-gain" telephone and broadband access systems for remote areas. • Contributed to development of TI C54x DSP-based, v.90-capable embedded product. • Designed and implemented embedded C++ inter-unit IPC for a distributed central office broadband access product. • Contributed to development of PowerPC MPC 850 based management card (C, ThreadX, 180k lines). • Planned and implemented company migration from SourceSafe to CVS source control. Developed infrastructure to support seamless CVS access from PCs. • Installed and administered Unix development servers.

Cybersource provides Unix consulting, application development and trainingservices. • Contributed to the porting of KDE to a hand-held Linux device. • Provided on-call Unix system administration.

• Led a three-person team to port Linux to a Hitachi SuperH-powered ruggedised computer. The team ported the kernel, improved the cross-compilation tools, built package management tools, ported various user-mode packages, built GUI system generators and wrote documentation. • Wrote video frame buffer driver. • Wrote device drivers for smart battery management using I2C. • Wrote driver for status LEDs, and user-mode daemon for battery status. • Reworked kernel touchscreen driver. • Managed kernel version upgrading and merging, patch production and submission of code to mainstream. • Set up and administered office (bill paying, office upkeep, organizing conference calls, Internet connections, etc).

• Wrote power-on and characterisation testing firmware in C for RISC-based calculators. • Developed a script engine in C++ using TCP sockets to assist in regression testing firmware for new calculators. • Co-developed software in C++ between an HP scientific calculator and a PC. Established and licensed project as Open Source. • Implemented a Web-based interface to the Unix ClearCase version control system, using Windows drag-and-drop, C and Unix CGI scripts.
