The internship provided exposure to several facets of engineering and the design process for storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and combined sewer systems. I shadowed members of the Project Design Group, and the exposure included attending field visits, completing design tasks as assigned, and attending preliminary design meetings and project specific design meetings. A requirement included keeping a personal timesheet. The field visits involved: the initial site visit for new projects, site visits to projects at various stages in the design process, and site visits to projects that were under construction. The design tasks included creating drainage area maps using ArcGIS to calculate peak flows for storm sewer systems, calculating peak flows for sanitary sewer systems, and using both for combined sewer systems. An additional task for one project included using HydraFlow to computer model the flow within the sewer system. Various projects included performing cost estimation. Additional tasks included attending bid openings and shadowing other departments throughout the District to better understand the overall operation and connection.
