After graduating with honours from UQ with bachelor degrees in Engineering (Mechanical) and Science (Mathematics), I was awarded a position on the BHP Billiton ‘Foundations for Graduates’ Program. During the program I rotated between different BMA operations, including open cut and underground mines, in a variety of capacities predominantly centred around project management. I then secured a full time role as a Reliability Engineer at Gregory Crinum Mine, a role which gave me the opportunity to utilise my passion for engineering and data analysis to drive system reliability and safety improvements. Building a reputation for being dependable and results driven, I then moved into the role of Longwall Equipment Overhauls Project Manager. Upon Crinum’s closure, I transferred to Broadmeadow Mine to be the Longwall Equipment Overhauls Project Manager, where I managed overhauls for the much larger and more complex Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) equipment. In late 2017 I left BHP, making a shift from coal mining to hard rock at South32’s Cannington Mine. Employed as a Reliability Engineer, I was technically unfamiliar with metalliferous processing however I did not allow this to limit my success. I was able to gain some leadership experience filling in as the Mobile Maintenance Superintendent, and shortly afterwards was promoted to Senior Reliability Engineer. Being responsible for budgeting and forecasting, this role exposed me to a much deeper level of the business side of the organisation. In early 2019 I was promoted to lead my team as the Asset Management Superintendent, where my focus has been to develop a practical, site-based foundation for asset management processes and priorities. Being in a position of influence, I have also used my passion for emissions reductions and energy efficiency to drive a number of energy reduction projects, which will continue to be a focus of my career.
