We have been taught to base our decisions on the conclusions of experts and science. And when decisions involve individuals and groups with conflicting ideas and goals the process intuitively includes building trust, compromise, consensus and common ground. In this course we play with the idea of working from a different set of assumptions. What if we assume compromise leads to compromised solutions and the compromised convictions of those involved? Instead of initially valuing consensus and common ground, what if we celebrate diverse perspective? And paradoxically what happens if we check conclusions and trust at the door and first let in passion, conflict, intuition?Can this be a path to better outcomes from the decisions we make? Is our ability to seek and deal with their unintended consequences enhanced? And is consensus and trust then an enhanced byproduct?This course can be meaningful for those looking for collaborative methods to improve product design, manufacturing processes, software architecture or for people looking for a meaningful way to engage in issues such as health care or even climate change.As individuals, if we can take ownership of diverse perspectives, including conflicting rationale, we can internally address our own conflicting conclusions. Not by reaching a compromise of others conclusions, but by arming ourselves with diverse rationale. As decision-makers, we are able to make better decisions.
