Maintenance Technician
As a full-time engineering student, this temporary summer opportunity refined my both my maintenance and troubleshooting skills while dramatically increasing my understanding of industrial HVAC. My employment here can be divided into two experiences: my time with the Oil Burner Shop and my time with the Power Plant.Oil Burner is an outdated term for the Oil Burner Shop. All of the oil burning boilers have been converted to burn gas or have been replaced with modern gas boilers. While with the Oil Burner Shop, I learned how boilers function and how to inspect and clean them. I also spent many hours disassembling convectors, cleaning them, then reassembling and repairing them as needed. I excelled so efficiently that I literally worked myself out of a job in half the expected time.As a result, I transferred to a steam power plant on the JMU campus. This proved to be a valuable opportunity that exponentially increased my knowledge base and skill set. While at the power plant, I quickly devoured the technical manuals on the steam boilers and steam-driven chillers. This enabled me to assist the maintenance crews during troubleshooting operations from a knowledgeable standpoint and provide input that would resolve issues to quickly restore the plant to full operational status. I removed and replaced components and completed that preventative maintenance tasks. I shadowed power plant operators learning and participating in the tasks required to ensure the plant ran efficiently, producing the chilled water supply to meet the demand. I also learned several new maintenance skills. I learned and became relatively proficient with a stick welder to the point where I was turned loose on projects not requiring a certified welder with full confidence from my supervisor that I would produce a quality product. I learned to cut thick metal with an acetylene torch. I also became confined space qualified so I could assist on steam line repairs in various manholes around campus.
