Originally recruited as part of the modifications team, I moved into 2IC and Leading hand roles before progressing into the Testing and Commissioning team. The project was the delivery of the brand new QNGR fleet of trains. Testing roles involved loading, updating and testing software, fault finding and rectification of wiring issues and parts failures at the test stage and full compliance and functionality testing of rolling stock units.The role also involves assisting the existing maintenance team at the depot on faults coming in on service trains.

Working FIFO to Port Hedland, maintaining all types of rail track machines with a focus on FlashButt Welders and rail Tamper machines.Breakdown maintenance and routine maintenance performed to keep machines on as little down time as possible.

Working as a casual Electrician, I was placed on a short contract job doing an automated conveyor sorting system for Schaefer, which included rough in and termination of power and control wiring, followed by afternoon shift duties as the maintenance electrician at a commercial bakery.

A short project with Yarratrams, installing a new passenger information display and driver gps system on the B2 class trams. This involved stripping out tram interiors and drivers desks, installing new wiring, screens and drivers computers and integrating new systems into existing control panels on the trams.

MVIC was a comercial construction Electrical company. Main tasks were cable tray/ladder, conduit work, rough in, fit-off of High bay and external floodlighting, single and three phase socket outlets and sub circuit distribution boards.

Newport Rail Depot.

Working on the Siemens fleet of passenger trains in the Newport rail depot. This was a redesign/retrofit project installing a new DTRS digital radio system and the new VICERS train driver vigilance and black box recorder systems. This involved installing new equipment, stripping out drivers control desks and control panels, modifying and rewiring them and reinstalling and integrating into existing wiring and systems.

I was employed here as an Electrical tester. My main task was testing and quality control on the whole range of distribution boards, control panels and PFC cabinets. This also included fault finding and rectification, construction and wiring of these various panels and boards too.

Australec are a smaller electrical contracting company who specialize in conveyor systems. I worked on several new install projects including the first in Australia of Dalmatics’ new Goods-To-Person, multi-shuttle and cross belt sorter systems. While on these projects I had Leading hand and 2IC duties, as well as carrying out install, test and commissioning tasks on various motors, control panels/distribution boards and conveyor systems. Other projects for Dematic and Shaefer conveyor systems, control panel construction and the on-call service for Sydney Quantas freight terminal were also included in my work role.

Briggs & Forrester are mainly involved in commercial construction projects, including Castle House apartments, Pestana Hotel and One Hyde Park luxury apartments. On all of these projects duties tasks ranged from cable tray/basket, pvc/steel conduit, switchboards, rough in of power and data cables and the fit off of electrical equipment. I was also required to fault find, rectify and test and commission electrical equipment and circuits as well as “i-light” smart lighting systems.

I was employed by ACC Technologies, the data and communications side of Heyday Group. While with them I was involved several new install and refurb jobs. The majority of the work was installing, terminating and testing CAT5 and CAT6 cables, sockets, frames and cabinets of KRONE and Visipatch types. There was also the install of backbone cabling and associated cable support systems, as well as some general power and lighting install in commercial buildings.

I was employed as a casual for a short contract with UGL for the construction of a surface sub-station on the Lane Cove Tunnel project. This job involved the install of HV Transformers, installation and termination of LV Mains cables and distribution boards, instrumentation cables and panels, sub-station power and lighting, cable ladder/tray. Tasks on this job also required underground work and strict lock out/tag out procedures.

I completed my fourth year with Electrogroup spending 2 months on the Lake Cowell gold mine, working on the construction of a rock crusher motor. The remaining 6 months of my time was spent with Sydney Water on a maintenance crew looking after water and sewage pumping stations, storage tanks and fluid measurement devices.

I started my apprenticeship with Star Electrical who were mainly doing large commercial construction projects. While with them I was on several large jobs from complete office block refurbs, hotel and apartment complex construction to high rise office block and shopping centre construction. Towards the end of my time with Star they were running out of work so I was place on hire to Downer EDI where I spent around 4 weeks on the Lucas Heights Nuclear reactor project and around 6 months on the Cross City Tunnel Project working underground. In my fourth year there was not enough work and I was released to Electrogroup to complete my apprenticeship.
