About Mitchell Rawlings

Looking for an exciting opportunity in the Australian workforce, having recently relocated to Sydney. My objective is to gain a higher position in a pathology laboratory as a senior biomedical scientist. I have recently completed and received a distinction in the BBTS specialist certificate course to further develop my professional skillsI moved to London from Australia in July 2016 and was sponsored on a tier 2 general visa with HCA laboratories. This gave me access to live, work and travel within the UK for 2 years (until July 2020) whereby the VISA was extended until I decided to return home in December 2020.As a senior scientist, I have learned the value of clear, concise communication and the importance of workplace health and safety, both from a clinical perspective as well as personal. I believe strongly that healthy and respectful relationships within laboratories is key in providing efficient and quality pathology testing. I have learned that attention to detail and organisational prowess in regards to time management is essential for laboratory scientists, especially with shift work, and I believe these skills are now ingrained in my personality.I hold a Bachelors degree in Applied Medical Science from Queensland University of Technology and I am currently registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Listed skills include Hematology, Laboratory Medicine, Pathology, Coagulation, and 10 others.

Biomedical Scientist (Haematology And Blood Transfusion)

London, United Kingdom

I was previously employed in Haematology and Blood Transfusion at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, as a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist. After relocating to London from my home town in Brisbane, Australia, this was my first position as a professional overseas. My main duties involve processing routine haematology and blood transfusion specimen through various analysers and authorising results appropriately. The technology I have utilised whilst at the Royal Free are as follows;- Sysmex XN series (XN10 and XN20)- Sysmex CS coagulation analyzers (CS5100 and CS2100)- Sysmex SP-10 Slide Maker Stainer- Starrsed Rack Line ESR analyser- Ortho Vision Max transfusion analyzers- Winpath operating system- OBOS blood ordering system (NHSBT)Primarily based in blood transfusion, we dealt with frequent major haemorrhages, especially since it is a transplant hospital. For every Liver Transplant scheduled, we had to prepare and have on stock 10 red cells, 10 fresh frozen plasma and 4 platelets in case of emergencies. I was also in charge of completing complex antibody investigations and training new staff on how to do so.I participated in a 24 hour, 7 day rotating shift roster including weekends, public holidays and frequent sets of overnight shifts, which required one to be familiar with all aspects of both laboratories. The Rapid Response Lab (RRL) dealt with haematology, morphology and coagulation. The blood transfusion laboratory dealt solely in transfusion, which also required monitoring blood stocks on the wards via Haemosafes. These are large vending-machine type blood fridges that allow trained nurses and HCA's obtain red cells on the principles of remote electronic issue. These we're often problematic during unsociable hours as staff were unfamiliar with troubleshooting. It was a challenging shift but I learnt a lot in a very short amount of time, and was able to be useful to my employer and fellow colleagues.

Jul 2016 - Jul 2017

Biomedical Scientist (Multi-Discipline)

The Wesley Hospital, Auchenflower Qld

I was employed as a multidisciplinary scientist at the Wesley Hospital STAT laboratory for Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology. This included duties in the fields of Haematology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunohaematology (Blood Banking). The main role of this laboratory is to provide IVD pathology services to hospital inpatients and ICON Cancer Care, Australia's largest carer if cancer and haematology patients. There is a particular emphasis placed on fast turn around times, and prioritising - specifically that of Wesley Emergency Centre patients (WEC) and those in critical conditions (ICU).I routinely operate instruments such as;- Sysmex XN series- Sysmex CS-2100i- Cobas Integra 800- Cobas E411 analyser- Diamed Classic Plus ID-GelStationI regularly participate in internal and external quality control (QAP) programs as per NATA lab accreditation. Currently I perform a supervisory role in the biochemistry department, duties of which include training new staff, more involved QC analysis, running RCPA QAP survey samples weekly and EOM reviews as well taking care of stores for the laboratory. The shifts for staff members are split over a 24 hour, 7 day shift roster including weekends and public holidays. I am also required to work at other laboratories in cases of staff shortages, which I do approximately once a week at our Mater Medical Centre laboratory in South Brisbane. Some of the shift duties include;- Reviewing blood films of oncology patients- Running / troubleshooting analysers and authorising biochemistry results- Organising tranfusions for hospital inpatients and ICON patients, including extensive testing of red cell antibodies, platelet transfusions, intravenous IVIG dosages and occasional Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) situations- Performing urgent microbiology from WEC patients, mainly urine dipsticks, cell counts and testing nasopharyngeal aspirates looking for Influenza A/B and RSV.

Mar 2014 - Jul 2016

Medical Laboratory Scientist (Haematology)

11 Riverview Place, Murarrie

I was employed as a scientist within the Haematology department of QML Pathology's main laboratory in Brisbane, Queensland. I was employed almost 3 months after completing my tertiary studies as a new graduate and took part in a rotating shift roster, ranging from 0630 till 0230, including frequent weekend and public holiday shifts.I routinely operated and maintained instruments such as;- Sysmex XT2100i Authomatic Haematology analyser- Sysmex SP-1000i Slide Prep Unit- Sysmex CS-5100 / CS2100i Coagulation analyser- Cobas Integra 800 (Specifically running EDTA's for HbA1c analysis)- Platelet Function Analyser / Platelet aggregometer- TS500 Tube Sorter / ArchiverWe received 6000-7000 EDTA tubes per day on average, which were processed through our analysers and eventually the results would be sent out to the referring doctors and their patients. This obviously included a very high turnover of full blood counts, which would entail reviewing blood films en masse (~100-120 slides per shift). This also included high volume coagulation testing, mainly INR's and some biochemistry (specifically HbA1c's) and Red Cell Folate testing. The department was fully equipped to deal with veterinary specimen and was a reference laboratory for malaria screening and diagnosis in Queensland.I worked within close proximity to Haematologists when processing freshly collected bone marrow biopsies, performing flow cytometry on the specimen and referring all new leukaemia and difficult cases to them for further judgement.Participation in internal / external quality assurance programs (QAP) was mandatory as per NATA laboratory accreditation. I also attended meetings, conferences and occasionally assisted in training new staff members and work experience students from the universities.
