I was a mentor and team leader which saw 10 multidisciplinary engineering and 1 journalist students undertake design and construction of a low ropes course & stormwater rectification works for a primary school with our stakeholders in Kigali, Rwanda. My key roles were to assist the students with all project aspects, from logistics to design and leadership.Working with locals, employing up to 15 locals a day, the team constructed a concrete slab to enclose the storm water drain in order to extend the schools recreational area, steel fabricated fence to make safe a fall hazard into the exposed storm water drain and a low ropes course consisting of tyre bridge, log steps, rope crossing and 10m flying fox. The UOW subject, Humanitarian Engineering and the Humanitarian Engineering society at UOW are looking to assist stakeholders into the future by creating a sustainable school to increase levels of education in the rural area, provide clean drinking water and assist in making schools safer for the children throughout Rwanda.

Rwanda

I was the assistant project manager and engineer on Project Rwanda. The project consisted of 10 engineering students working to provide potable water to around 200 people in a rural Rwandan village in a sustainable manner. Overall the project spanned from fundraising the capital costs, design, procurement and construction. The tasks challenged the team to think critically, engineer flexibly and make tough on the spot decisions in the developing nation to ensure a successful implementation of the chosen design.To read more about the project, https://projectrwandasite.wordpress.com/
