Media Relations Intern
As a Media Relations Intern for the American Hockey Leagues' Norfolk Admirals, I served under Director of Media Relations, Keith Phillips, where I worked as a middle-man between the team and the local media. During regular office hours, I learned many of the everyday tasks of Keith's position, which included, but are not limited to, crafting press releases, analyzing statistics, updating and analyzing spreadsheets on Microsoft Excel, as well as using social media and game-day promotions to help fill seats for upcoming games. During the games, I often live-tweeted the action, giving fans who were not at the game a chance to get the play-by-play. On other game nights, I used Adobe Photoshop to edit raw photos taken by the team's photographer, John Wright, and uploaded them to Facebook. During my time with the Admirals, I also wrote two news articles on team for the AHL's "On the Beat" section of their website. Both articles, which appeared on the front page of theahl.com, required me to interview players and coaches, which, to me, was the most rewarding experience of my season with the team. My big project with the team was my "Mobile Mania" game-day promotion. The promotion asked fans to submit an answer to a trivia question to the team's mobile website, using their smart phones or tablets, for the chance to win a puck autographed by one of the players. The goals of the promotion were to attract more traffic to the team's mobile website, increase the team's email contact data base, and to generate more fan interaction during games. All of the goals were met, and sponsorship for Mobile Mania is likely for next season.
