About Mitchell Scott
I am a first year PhD student at Emory University, studying computational mathematics and computer science. with a background in computational biological engineering. While I have had many opportunities for hands-on experience-- undergraduate biophysics researcher, biorobotics competitor, in-silico modeler-- my love for mathematics, particularly applied and computational mathematics has been central to my career and education. While, I am just starting my program at Emory, my research interest of scientific computing have been integral to my studies since taking my first numerical analysis course at Cornell and all throughout my time at Tufts. I have also been a course grader/ teaching assistant (Calculus I and Numerical Analysis sequence), given talks about quantum computing algorithms, and defended novel research on the topic of using tensor based approximations on a discretized fractional partial differential equations. I am looking for opportunities to further my academic career through internships, summer seminars/ schools, and academic conferences.

Teaching Assistant
CurrentMath 315 (Numerical Analysis) - Spring 2023- Wrote solutions and rubrics for 10 homework given to 33 students.- Designed 11 coding lab sections and facilitated weekly office hours to provide individualized feedback on math and coding work.- Lectured (75 minutes) on 3 advanced topics in numerical linear algebra.

Current
Graduate Student Researcher
As part of my impending master's thesis, I have been doing research in the field of computational and applied mathematics. More specifically, I am interested in scientific computing, numerical linear algebra, and numerical partial differential equations. The majority of my research so far has been utilizing tensor decompositions on specific families of structured matrices to find a low rank approximation that can be used as a preconditioner on iterative processes that i.) reduce run time, ii.) reduce storage, and iii.) keeps the desired approximation accurate up to a certain threshold. This primarily has me coding (predominately in MATLAB, and a little C++) using well-known packages and developing my own. While the coding experiments are fun and instantly gratifying, I am a mathematician, first and foremost, so proving theorems using the algebraic structures of n-way arrays, studying computational algorithms and using complexity theory, is how I spend my research time when my code is running.
