Industry Placement Master Thesis

Brisbane, Australia

Undertook a Master Thesis as a full-time industry placement at Ergon Energy. Under the supervision of three senior engineers at Ergon Energy the Master Thesis looked predominantly at the feasibility of introducing electric vehicle public transport buses to the bus fleet of regional cities. All currently available bus technologies, including conventional internal combustion engine and compressed natural gas, were assessed to clearly identify the advantages and disadvantages they offer to both bus network operators and power network operators. A general methodology was constructed that allows users to enter the specifics of their bus network, such as distance between stops and bus stopping frequency, in order to produce a fuel/energy consumption estimate that is calculated based on the results of numerous past and ongoing bus trials and studies. The end result is a summary that details the expected cost of each bus technology if it were to be used on the specific route entered by the user as well as a summary of the other non-cost related advantages/disadvantages of each bus technology. Benefits that increased uptake of electric public transport buses offers to power distribution network operators are also discussed and several opportunities that would arise from helping increase electric bus uptake are highlighted.Master thesis was titled "A General Methodology for Network Integration of Alternatively Fuelled Transit Buses in Regional Cities, and Cairns Case Study." A conference paper summarising the findings of this work has been attached below and a full copy of the thesis report is available upon request via email or LinkedIn message.
