Prosecute criminal cases in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee that are generated by the Johnson City Police Department

Under the supervision of Professor of Clinical Law, Christina A. Zawisza, acted as Guardian ad Litem in Memphis and Shelby County Juvenile Court proceedings on behalf of minor-clients. Responsible for drafting and filing with the Juvenile Court various legal documents including, subpoenas, trial briefs, proposed orders, and summons. Also, responsible for scheduling and conducting interviews of potential witnesses, doctors, and other parties interested in the matter before the Juvenile Court in preparation for trial.

Performed research projects at the request of Criminal Defense Attorney James M. Gulley on an as-needed basis. Projects include analyzing the constitutionality of Tennessee’s implied consent law, specifically T.C.A. § 55-10-406 (d)(5)(B), in light of Missouri v. McNeely, 133 S.Ct. 1552 (2013) and Maryland v. King, 133 S.Ct. 1958 (2013) and investigating witness testimony for use during trial.

Under the supervision of District Magistrate Judge Tu M. Pham, regularly conducted research and writing assignments regarding particularized areas of both federal and state law. Composed multiple draft Reports and Recommendations, after reviewing complaints and relevant case law, on topics of law including Title VII and 42 U.S.C. § 1983.

Conducted research assignments for the District Attorney General and Staff concerning a range of legal issues from electronic search warrants to the admissibility of a defendant’s prior sexual acts under Tennessee Rule of Evidence 404. Drafted criminal court motions, interviewed witnesses and victims, and actively participated in hearings and trials in criminal court. Acted as prosecuting attorney for the State of Tennessee with permission from Tennessee Supreme Court pursuant to Rule 7 § 10.03, under the supervision of A.D.A. Teresa Anne Nelson, in State v. Johnson, Case No. S61,613, and successfully prosecuted the charges of Aggravated Assault and Reckless Endangerment.

Performed research for Staff of the District Attorney General, writing memoranda on my findings and regularly sat in on and assisted with General Sessions Court proceedings. Assisted Deputy District Attorney in annotating sections of State of Tennessee House Bill 3175.
