I collected and analyzed data on government operations. This involved creating protocols for identifying legal phenomena in congressional bills and optimizing a search procedure to resolve ambiguous cases. I then interpreted the results in relation to theories of legislative oversight. I gained greater familiarity with the techniques and approaches of the quantitative research process, and learned both how to develop a research plan and adapt to unforeseen problems.

I compiled and analyzed data on regulations published by the federal government. I also drafted and edited AAF publications, including a co-authored piece with Sam Batkins in the journal Regulation. I attended and summarized congressional hearings and policy events, featuring some of them on the AAF blog.

As an intern, I was given a series of special assignments. I first reviewed the Mayor's website (http://www.nashville.gov/Mayors-Office.aspx) for errors, dead links, and other issues with functionality. I then suggested improvements, based upon a survey of other mayoral websites. Later, I again identified best practices in comparable cities and briefed the relevant staff members, this time with regard to neighborhood outreach programs.
