Returning to the Environmental Resources Team and with Mighty River Power rebranded as Mercury, the needs of the company, in a BAU function, had changed, and with it; a focus on adding additional value, leading new initiatives, and embracing new tools gave the opportunity for growth.New Projects included a business case for upgrades to hydro interceptors improving environmental performance, securing consents for operational flexibility at Kawerau and Mokai, lead support in drilling campaign at Kawerau, demolition of an 80-tonne boulder from a tailrace (with three iwi partners) and pitching a special project devoted to water allocation flexibility and implementing IoT networks for surface water takes on the Waikato.

Operating communal heat networks for residential and commercial properties has potential to lose big money for property managers. You negotiate a contract for your fuel and set a tariff for your customers. What affects your business risk and recovery is the heat efficiency of the scheme you run. Poor design, operation, maintenance and access to data leads to large losses - in both heat and money.My role with Insite was focused on interpreting and problem solving with heat networks so that our clients provide the required heat using less fuel, their customers pay a price that is transparent and fair, and that their energy risk is appropriately managed. The ability to advise, inform and consult with over 40 clients over 140 schemes providing heat to more than 10,000 customers is core to a role that involves high levels of technical engineering interpretation and a commitment to achieving both financial and environmental energy objectives.

In this part-time consultant role I supported British Gas in the regulatory administration, technical delivery and recovery of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) subsidy for the installation of 14 ground-sourced heat-pumps, each over 1MW.

Geoscart design, install and financed commercial scale ground-sourced heat-pumps to provide both heating and cooling for new build and retrofit installations - mainly supermarkets. Using a closed-loop borehole system for geothermal energy at depths of up to 250m, heating and cooling loads are balanced providing daily and seasonal energy efficiency, heat storage and recycling. My role was a focus on providing contractual and commercial support to the delivery and engineering business at Geoscart. In the unfortunate change of business environment in the UK around renewable investment and supermarket competition, Greenfield Energy, the company trading as Geoscart went into administration in July 2015. At this point, I stayed on with the administrators; Grant Thornton, on a part-time consultant basis to secure outstanding renewable heat incentive funding for the clients; Sainsbury's - worth an annual total of £2m/year over 20 years.Key responsibilities included the review and management of respective utility partner, supplier and client contracts, including NDAs, Installation Agreements, Licenses, O&M Agreements and Collateral Warranties. Accreditation of over 25MW in Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) tariffs. Forecasting earnings and performance rebates through carbon, consumption and cost models.

Since 1909, Platts has provided information and insights that help customers make sound trading and business decisions and enable the markets to perform with greater transparency and efficiency.In the Platts Reference Data team my role was in developing and managing comprehensive reference information around Platts commodity market products. This process further enabled the marketplace by improving the quality of existing products and services while also providing Platts an opportunity to create new products and services to drive its customers’ growth.

Mighty River Power (now branded Mercury) is a major competitor in the New Zealand electricity market, and was named Energy Company of the year in 2010 and 2012. In operating a flexible, multi-fuel generation portfolio producing more than 90% renewable generation, from low fuel-cost hydro and a major geothermal component, environmental effects need to be appropriately managed.My role contributed to the achievement of the Generation Development and Operations business objectives by interpreting and providing advice on resource consents, fostering stakeholder relationships and owning environmental management matters. This role required a broad technical understanding and a strong ability to communicate and build relationships with partners, local government and indigenous iwi groups.

This temporary summer operator role required working in shift rotation with teams, packaging dairy products such as milk powder, butter and ghee. In these roles skills learned were; basic engineering, cleaning and maintenance; programming and calibrating a continuous machinery line; sampling and recording product and; working with a highly combustible substance (milk powder). In addition key competencies were heavy labouring and attention to health, safety and food standards.
