In my career I've been a video producer, an ad agency owner, newspaper publisher, and a senior media marketing executive. For the last decade I've been a marketing speaker teaching local media how to better use traditional and online advertising and produce video to more effectively communicate both advertisers' messages and their own.But while I have extensive knowledge in advertising, marketing, and video production, what makes me unique is my understanding of human behavior. Specifically, how to get and hold people's attention and communicate an effective message in today's over-marketed world. The flood of online content and changes in the marketing ecosystem have rewritten the laws of mass communication. Businesses must change not only where they communicate, but how they communicate to be effective. Here are some things I know. ✓ Humans are ruled by subconscious triggers and primal emotions. Three simple laws dictate all human behavior. Master these and you rule the world. ✓ Both communicating and marketing are fundamentally entertainment. You must grab attention in order to persuade. You can't bore people into buying.✓ Audience size today means nothing. Without engagement you can't persuade, and persuasion is what marketing is all about. Engaging even a small, select audience and delivering the right message can change an organization's future.✓ The future of local media (like newspapers) lies in storytelling. Local media already has the community's trust, the technical ability, and the right venue. They must shift their focus from selling ads to consultative digital agency services helping local business better tell their story in whatever venue the business needs.
