At Sonos, I contributed as a Mechanical Engineer within their hardware group. The hardware group's main goal was to develop wireless in-home speakers. New product development at Sonos required coordination between all of the stakeholders to determine capabilities, budgeting, and timelines. I was given the opportunity to work relatively independently with RF and Acoustic engineers to develop accurate prototypes of future products for testing purposes. Along with developing CAD and 3D printed prototypes, I prototyped a new manufacturing processes involving ultrasonic welding. After working with suppliers to do a sample run, I characterized the mechanical and acoustic characteristics using an Instron and Klippel QC Software. I'm also proud to have won an innovation prize at Sonos' internal 'Hack Week.' I developed the fully functional product alongside a coworker who came to me with his vision. We iterated through designs and eventually the hard work paid off with the 'Best Long Term Hack' award.

The Auburn plant was only a year old so it functioned similarly to a start-up in that everyone has the opportunity to wear different hats. This allowed me to build several projects from my observations on the shop floor in order to improve all aspects of production. I was primarily involved with the production of high pressure turbine blades for the CF34 line of commercial GE engines. From raw castings to finished product, I have gained hands-on experience in running and maintaining EDMs, CNCs, and CMMs. My primary responsibility is the overall operation of Magerle CNC Grinders. This process forms very tightly toleranced dovetails on our turbine blades. Aside from my day-to-day machine troubleshooting and team coaching, I completed several projects during my 6 months on this co-op. My first was to repair and setup a Magerle grinder for a new line of high pressure turbine blades being brought into the facility. This project required attention to detail and a thorough understanding of the turbine blade's dimensions in order to develop a consistent program for running production parts. I rewrote some of the programming in order to reduce cycle time and improve the operator's interaction with the grinder. I also increased the integrity of nonconformance writeups on routers, added a more precise method of inspection prior to shipping turbine blades, and developed rework procedures for aged WIP.

I worked as a Summer Research Associate at the Healthcare Systems Engineering Institute. This institute is funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and our mission is to improve local healthcare according to the Triple Aim. I was placed on three projects with different mission statements and interfaced with healthcare administration within various hospital systems. This allowed me to develop analytic and interpersonal skills pertaining to the engineering process. Along with problem solving, I had to ensure that people understood the logic and believed in the improvements that my teams brought to each healthcare system. Being a part of different teams for each project gave me insight into the best practices of working effectively with diverse groups of people. I learned that great ideas, products, or anything that an engineer ever produces will be worth nothing if its value is not apparent. Communication and leadership are a large part of engineering and I will never be done learning how to motivate teammates or inspire change. My time at Healthcare Systems Engineering Institute has been invaluable regarding this growth in personal character and analytic thinking.
