During this time, I led a team of PhD candidates, graduate and undergraduate students and forged interdisciplinary collaborations with University of Pittsburgh, Weill Medical College and University of Washington among others. Achievements during this time include: - Established a new field, Circadian Computing, focused on biological models of mental health & performance - Led the winning team for the MoodRhythm app in the Heritage Open mHealth Challenge ($100,000 prize)- Published over 30 scientific papers in leading peer-reviewed venues- Investigated the role of technology in supporting and disrupting the lives of people with bipolar disorder- Developed novel human-centered methods for designing technology for severe mental illness- Won 3 funding grants (>$200K)- Created MoodRhythm, a ubiquitous system to support stability of circadian rhythms for individuals with affective illness,- Developed Clockwise, a low-level smartphone tool to detect underlying sleep patterns, circadian rhythms and cognitive states- Created MoodLight, an ambient meditative biofeedback lighting system- Developed a new area investigating the integration of personal digital information into computer games- Designed and piloted Biogotchi, a living plant feedback system- Filed 2 patents related to circadian computing -
Adjunct ProfessorTrinity College Dublin Oct 2016 - May 2017Dublin, IeI developed & delivered a module focusing on HCI in real world healthcare settings for TCD's Health Informatics Masters Program. An emphasis was placed on engagement with real clinical and patient issues. Group projects focused on issues encountered by real patients, who kindly volunteered their time. Outputs included the creation of realistic composite patient personas that were made available online via the Irish Health Service and the design of 4 systems to address challenges experienced by patient volunteers. Participating students gained a number of new skills including knowledge how to: • Identify key user issues in the design of information communication technologies• Apply appropriate methods to identify user requirements in a system• Apply appropriate methods to evaluate the usability of a system• Design a computing technology based on Norman’s design principles • Evaluate a computing technology based on Jacob Nielson’s Usability Heuristics • Apply knowledge of social and psychological processes to the design of technology for use in healthcare• Evaluate how technology can mediate in the patient-doctor relationship• Identify how personal technologies might be employed to enhance patient care / well being• Identify design features that contribute to health, safety, well-being and productivity -
